A Hearty Homestead Stew with Deep Frontier Roots

Inspired by the wide-open plains and no-nonsense cooking of the Great Plains, our Dakota Territory Beef Barley Stew is a rustic, stick-to-your-ribs classic. This dry soup mix brings together hearty lentils, shiitake mushrooms, leeks, and barley, seasoned simply to let the ingredients shine. Just add cubed beef and let it simmer low and slow to create a warm, deeply satisfying meal that tastes like it came straight from a cast iron pot by a cabin fire.

This stew reminds us of the kind of meals frontier families relied on—hearty, nourishing, and built to feed a crowd after a long day’s work. Whether you're tucked in for winter or feeding your own homestead crew, this long-simmered classic hits the spot.

This is comfort food with a pioneer spirit—simple, soulful, and deeply satisfying. Gather 'round and taste the timeless tradition of the Dakota Territory.

    Best Ever

I made this stew with potatoes and followed the recipe exactly. My mother-in-law, who is from Michigan, and grew up eating this type of stew said that it was the best one that she has ever eaten!

    Your Food is Amazing

Posted by Lori on Jan 18th 2024

I just wanted to take the time to tell you, your food is amazing. We had the Beef Barley Stew tonight and it was delicious. It's cold in CA (well by California standards lol) and I have been working non stop and had to participate in a training today all day. It was so awesome to put the stew in the crock pot while I had my lunch break and it was finished when I was done with my training. It so reminded me of my dad's stew. He's been gone for 18 years and for the first time since he left this earth I got some good stew. Thank you. I cant wait to try the other two. I will definitely be ordering from you all again.

    Beef Barley Stew

Posted by Val on Jan 16th 2024

Delicious. I browned beef with light flour in coconut oil then followed the label directions. It was delicious. My husband loved it. I only added about 1&1/2 c of potatoes and no mushrooms. ( I forgot ) beautiful hearty thick beef stew. I simmered for 2&1/2 to 3hours. Wonderful!!!

    Beef barley bean stew variation

Posted by Amy Van D. on Jan 12th 2023

Left out the turnips/potatoes, and added cooked rice at the same time as the mushrooms. Delicious and not quite as heavy as potatoes. Plus a great way to get rid of leftover rice from takeout! Win win!!
